Teacher Layoff Notices: Deadlines and Rights Educators Should Know (2026)
Why the WARN Act usually does not apply to public schools, California’s March 15 and May 15 deadlines, hearing rights and layoff order for teachers and staff.
Employment law decides how much notice you get before a layoff, whether your job is protected while you are on medical or family leave, and what you can do together with your coworkers. Our employment law guides explain the rules that matter most when jobs are cut: the federal WARN Act, the state laws that add to it, and the protections that apply during leave or a union campaign.
Every guide is written for workers, not lawyers, and links to the statute or the agency that enforces the rule, so you can check it yourself. To see the law at work, follow the WARN notices that employers file with each state, collected every hour from official state sources.

Yes. Several states, including California, New York and New Jersey, have their own "mini-WARN" laws that can cover smaller employers or require more notice than the federal rule. Our state-by-state guide compares them.
An employer can include you in a layoff that would have happened anyway, but it cannot lay you off because you took leave protected by the Family and Medical Leave Act. The U.S. Department of Labor enforces the FMLA.
