eBay is laying off about 9% of its employees in its second round of job cuts this year, according to an internal memo from CEO Jamie Iannone first reported by Reuters on Wednesday. A company spokesperson confirmed the layoffs. eBay did not say how many jobs are affected, but the company employed about 12,300 people at the end of 2025, about 7,200 of them in the United States, according to its latest annual report. Nine percent of that total is roughly 1,100 jobs. CNBC put the figure at about 1,000.
What the memo says
Iannone told employees that “our strategy is working” and that eBay needs to “make thoughtful choices about where we focus and invest,” according to Reuters, which reviewed the memo. The company plans to move resources to its fastest-growing areas, and affected staff will be informed in the coming days.
The cut comes while the business is doing well. When eBay last reported results in August, it forecast third-quarter revenue above Wall Street estimates, and its shares are up nearly 40% this year, compared with about 12% for the S&P 500, Reuters reported. eBay has been pushing into collectibles, authenticated luxury goods and refurbished products, and bought the fashion resale app Depop for $1.4 billion to reach younger shoppers. It is due to report third-quarter earnings next week.
Second round in 2026, third big cut since 2024
In February, eBay cut about 800 jobs, or about 6% of its staff, TechCrunch reported. In January 2024 it eliminated about 1,000 jobs, also about 9% of its full-time workforce, Fortune reported at the time. Taken together, the three rounds add up to about 2,900 jobs.
eBay’s headcount peaked at about 34,600 at the end of 2014, when the company still included PayPal. Since the spin-off in 2015 it has stayed between about 10,800 and 14,100 employees, according to its annual reports.

WARN notices: what the state records show
eBay’s most recent WARN notice in the seven states GoLayoffs tracks was filed in New York in August 2025, for the closure of a site in Onondaga County affecting 215 workers. As of Wednesday evening, no WARN notice for the new cuts had appeared in California, where eBay is based in San Jose, or in the other states we check every hour. Large layoffs at a single site generally require 60 days’ notice under the federal WARN Act, so any filings should appear in the coming weeks. You can follow them on the eBay layoffs page and on Layoffs Today.
